She Did It!: 8 RIVETING Films Directed by Women

The Palm Springs Cultural Center brings you a season of films directed by women. And we think our timing is pretty good, too! Curated by Deserted Films.

It all begins on September 8th, and lasts through Spring of 2025.

It's about women. And it’s about time.

Nov. 3: Lady Bird (2017) Greta Gerwig

Gerwig’s solo directorial debut is a close and sometimes hilarious look at a mother/daughter relationship at an especially fraught moment in a young woman’s life: the end of high school. Saoirse Ronan (Lady Bird) and Laurie Metcalf (as her mother) are electrifying from start to finish. Their effortless naturalism plays perfectly with a directorial style committed to finding a visual language that would make their interactions seem like memories. Working closely with cinematographer Sam Levy, Gerwig carefully planned every single shot in the film a year before production even began! Gerwig’s is a uniquely unified directorial vision. And that level of precision is on full display in the more recent Barbie (2023).

Sister Sarah Joan: “You clearly love Sacramento.”

Christine 'Lady Bird' McPherson: “I do?”

Sister Sarah Joan: “You write about Sacramento so affectionately and with such care.”

Christine 'Lady Bird' McPherson: “I was just describing it.”
