Twain was born in Windsor, Ontario, in 1965 as Eilleen Regina Edwards to Sharon and Clarence Edwards. Her parents divorced when Eilleen was only two years old. Sharon moved to Timmins, Ontario, taking Eilleen and her daughters with her. She later married Jerry Twain, an Ojibwa from the Mattagami First Nation. The family was plagued with poverty; money and food were often scarce. Twain began singing in bars at age eight to help her family. Once her sisters were able to live on their own, the resort manager helped Twain set up a showcase of demo tapes for record executives in Nashville.
