Twain was born in Windsor, Ontario, in 1965 as Eilleen Regina Edwards to Sharon and Clarence Edwards. Her parents divorced when Eilleen was only two years old. Sharon moved to Timmins, Ontario, taking Eilleen and her daughters with her. She later married Jerry Twain, an Ojibwa from the Mattagami First Nation. The family was plagued with poverty; money and food were often scarce. Twain began singing in bars at age eight to help her family. Twain's career climb suffered a setback at age 22 when both her parents died in a car crash, and she moved back to Timmins to care for her younger siblings. She relocated them to Huntsville, Ontario, where she supported them by singing at the nearby Deerhurst Resort. Once her sisters were able to live on their own, the resort manager helped Twain set up a showcase of demo tapes for record executives in Nashville. It was during this time that she changed her name to Shania, the Ojibwa word for on my way.
