About this Event

Join us on a 1.5 hour, small group walking tour of 1890’s Portland when it was named the most dangerous seaport in the world by the governments of Britain, France and Germany – and Shanghaied sailors. Over 2,216 English Sailors were kidnapped between 1896 and 1900 in Portland and forced to work as merchant sailors in the most appalling conditions where death was just one misstep away.

Featuring ~

  • The 1880's Flying Prince Incident in which Bucko Kelly kidnapped 27 dead men to work aboard a British merchant ship.
  • The story of Bridget Grant, the housewife who introduced Shanghaiing to the Columbia River - and never spent a night in J*il despite kidnapping hundreds of men.
  • The saga of Citizen Jim Turk, a man who Shanghaiied hundreds. Including his own son, Francis who he Shanghaiied regularly.
  • The ultimate Shanghaiier in the World -- Laurence M. Sullivan -- who became the richest man in the Northwest by turning Shanhaiing into an industry, Shanghaiing thousands and becoming a true millionaire in the process. His name was better known than Queen Victoria, feared in every port of the world.

And of course, we point out all the intriguing sites where Shanghaiing was carried out. In the 1890s it was a major growth industry here leading to Portland being considered the most dangerous sea port in the world. Not bad when you consider that 50 years earlier there was no one living here. At all. Just a crowd of elk. Seriously. How did this sweet little city become so corrupt in such a short time?

We offer tours years around. Please call Jim at 503 298-3661 for schedule and availability during the winter months.
