Shame, in life and in therapeutic relationship.
Shame is a relatively new addition to the diagnostic world of pathologies of awareness. It began to become a focus of greater attention in the 1970’s and later with the recognition of narcissism as an evolving socio-cultural epidemic with psychological implications. Writing was scarce. Christopher Lasch wrote about it and psychological interventions were starting to be formulated around the ideas of Kohut. Before that time this condition was considered generally to be a member of a group of conditions referred to as Personality disorders. Previously, these were not considered to be pathologies treatable by therapeutic intervention and belonged to a separate group from the treatable neuroses (axis 2 of the DSM). Shame became the central organizing principle for these conditions.
The creation of interventions that could alter the awareness of these types of clients was a significant shift in thinking for psychotherapies (Gestalt as well as Psychoanalytic and other similar approaches that explored the workings of awareness and consciousness rather than simply behavior change.) Gestalt therapy has developed a significant voice in this new work that aims at the amelioration of shame. It is also becoming clearer that shame is not only involved in the destruction of healthy awareness for the clients with personality disorders but may be relevant for the more in-depth treatment of additional seemingly unrelated pathologies, including addictions, eating disorders and other difficulties that clients bring to therapy.
We will consider some ideas around the origins of shame, how they are different from the traditional evolution of neuroses, and the relational differences involved in interventions with shame.
