About this Event

Shame Containment Theory

Description: Enhance your practice with our groundbreaking in-person training course on shame containment theory. Tailored for counsellors, psychotherapists, teachers, social workers, and other professionals, this course delves into the emerging understanding of shame as a pivotal factor in mental and emotional well-being. As society recognizes the profound impact of shame on individuals, our course introduces a fresh perspective and innovative approach to understanding and working with shame. Through the shame containment theory lens, this course will provide practical insights into why we have shame from the perspective of attachment and how shame is a vital emotion that is needed for survival.

In this training we will delve into the fundamental five components that constitute the bedrock of shame containment theory. These are: attachment injuries, contained shame, uncontained shame, shame containment strategies, and re-containment strategies. Through this learning experience, you will gain an understanding of these concepts, enabling you to recognize and navigate the intricate landscape of shame experienced by your clients.

Why is this training needed?

Shame is a common but often misunderstood emotion. It has traditionally been a subject rarely taught in professional training. However, there has been a surge in interest in shame in recent years as professionals are beginning to recognise shames importance in mental and emotional wellbeing. Shame containment theory offers a fresh and innovative approach to shame. The theory offers not only a greater understanding of shame but also a model for working with shame. As clients who feel stuck are often experiencing shame, this training offers different insights into interpersonal and intrapersonal dynamics.

  • Participants will be able to recognise which part of the shame is activated in their clients
  • Therapists will recognise that they already have transferable skills needed to discuss shame
  • 6 hours of CPD
