For centuries the Haudenosaunee practiced the tradition of body marking. This tradition held an important and prominent place in the culture and society throughout the Northeastern Woodlands. It is a tradition that went dormant due to colonization by the 1800s, and with it the teachings, language, and deeper understanding to its purpose for the people. There has been a resurgence in tattoo revitalization efforts for many Onkwehón:we (Indigenous) peoples throughout the world over the last decades. Learn about the efforts that have been undertaken in the community of Kahnawà:ke over the last ten years to revive, revitalize, and reclaim this ancient tradition.
