“I will praise any man that will praise me.”I see it’s a low bar for praise then. Shocking.
Yes folks, Boozy Bard is at it again, and since we loved the Roman sword-and-sandal story of "Julius Caesar" that we did 'recently', we decided to take on it's even sword-ier sequel "Antony And Cleopatra" this month; and we're doing it in our own fashion that we call "Shakespeare Raw".
How does it work? I'm glad you asked.
A group of actors arrive the day of the show having read (or at least skimmed) the script so they are at passingly familiar with the text. Then, they pull a character name from the casting director (aka Hat) to learn who they will be playing that night. They then have approximately 10 minutes to get into character (read: grab a drink) and get ready for their first scene. And the next one. And the one after that. You get the idea.
"But I'm not familiar with the play" you say. Fair enough. Well, here's the gist:
Mark Antony, one of the three rulers of the Roman Empire, spends his time in Egypt, living a life of decadence and conducting an affair with the country’s beautiful queen, Cleopatra. When a message arrives informing him that his wife, Fulvia, is dead and that Pompey is raising an army to rebel against the triumvirate, Antony decides to return to Rome. In Antony’s absence, Octavius Caesar and Lepidus, his fellow triumvirs, worry about Pompey’s increasing strength. Caesar condemns Antony for neglecting his duties as a statesman and military officer in order to live a decadent life by Cleopatra’s side.
Then a lot more happens but that should be enough to get you started.
You'll have three opportunities to catch this spectacle, March 10th, 11th, and 12th all at 7:30. Doors officially open at 7pm.
The location? Best Place at the Historic Pabst Brewery. Yeah, the one that looks like a castle. We're doing Shakespeare in a CASTLE!!! A castle with on-street parking. When there isn’t a Bucks game or a nearby concert anyway.
Cost is $10 at the door or $5 if you're in a toga. SHAKESPEAREAN TOGA PARTY!!! This is $5 we're talking about here! That's another $5 you can spend at the bar.
So be sure to stop on by and party all night because "Finish, good lady; the bright day is done,
And we are for the dark."
