What to Expect
DJs Ronnie Brown and Dave Hamer spinning 100% vinyl:
R&B, 60s Soul, Motown, Mod, Ska, Northern Soul
Late 50s early 60s golden era for British kids as far as music and fashion go.
Rhythm & Blues, an obscure music overlooked in America, taken to heart by beatniks and mods, exploded in the coffee bars of Soho London, loved by the mods, artists like Georgie Fame playing small clubs, also the West Indians of the 60s. Clubs like the Scene, where Guy Stevens was bringing new R&B records over from the States weekly, also the Flamingo, another legendary all-nighter. This phenomenon had spread up north with the legendary Roger Eagle turning the Twisted Wheel cafe into the coolest place in Manchester, also over in Sheffield Peter Stringfellow at the King Mojo (yes that Stringfellow), but this was happening all over the country and becoming the start of a music scene that was underground, cool and hip and still is today.
Rhythm and Blues was starting to become less relevant from the 70s as Northern Soul became popular, but there were still small clubs with small crowds still putting on events, but now experiencing a resurgence all over the country as R&B clubs spring up all over the country, with their own identities and opinions of what is good or bad.
SHAKE YOUR HIPS, named after Slim Harpo’s 1966 release, started before lockdown and has been on in Darwen, Preston, Whalley, Blackburn and various other places.
Preston had its own cool places in the 60s/70s: the Stax club, Castle Vernon bowling alley, Booths Cafe and loads more…
Shake Yer Hips tries to recreate the heyday of the legendary clubs where Rhythm and Blues, Ska, Bluebeat, 60s soul from labels like Stax, Atlantic and Motown and dozens of others provided a soundtrack for kids of the time, all in one afternoon.
Records for the day, again too many to mention in one go:
Bo Diddley – Let the Kids Dance
Jackie Weaver – The Tingle
Folk Brothers – Oh Carolina
Johnnie Taylor – Changes
Skatalites – Christine Keeler
The Contours – First I Look at the Purse
Ricardo Ray – Nitty Gritty
Impressions – Can’t Satisfy
Joe Tex – You’re Alright
Ray Charles
Patience Valentine – If You Don’t Come
