About this Event
SHADOW WORK FOR IMPROVISERS
Are you a comedy improviser?
Do you want to stretch beyond your comfort zone and bring to life darker, edgier characters — the kind who are villainous yet still charismatic, funny, and lovable?
If so, Shadow Work for Improvisers is for you.
Through a series of exercises and play, we will explore the parts of you that are typically deemed ‘socially unacceptable’. The parts that we might typically hide.
This is your invitation to take off some of these polite masks, and to play with some more shadowy aspects of human nature.
All with the intention of feeling confident to create characters with a full range of human expression within our improv.
Give yourself, your fellow players, and your audience the gift of complex, grounded ‘bad’ characters.
Disclaimer:
Whilst this space cannot be guaranteed to be trigger-free and fully ‘safe’ (owing to the nature of improv, and of the subject matter), the facilitator is experienced in trauma informed facilitation and shadow work. Our intention is to make it as safe as possible for you to explore and play in this territory. This workshop sits somwhere between personal development and performance skills.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM THIS WORKSHOP:
- Exercises that gently and playfully guide you into the parts of yourself that you might typically hide because they are deemed less socially acceptable.
- An invitation to sculpt these parts into joyful characters, full of life and pleasure, that bring extra edge and humanity to your improv.
- A workshop that is somewhere between personal development and performance skills. That asks you to go deep within yourself to play with parts of you that might feel a little exposing, but also hopefully liberating.
- An opportunity to bring these characters into scene work and get a feel for how it is to play them within an improv context.
WHO IS THIS WORKSHOP FOR?
- People who have several years' improv experience. Who are comfortable with scene work and game.
- People of all ages (18+), races, sexualities, genders.
- People who sometimes default to 'nice' or 'good' characters in their improv and would like to expand their range.
WHO IS THIS WORKSHOP NOT FOR:
- People who are new to improv, or beginners.
- People who know they are easily triggered by more offensive or edgier comedy. This will be a gentle workshop, but owing to the nature of improv, and the invitation of this workshop, there might be more edgy material than at a typical improv workshop being explored.
- People who want to come to the workshop to create characters that are deliberately offensive, misogynistic, racist, etc. This workshop is about finding the joy in our inner villians, not creating offence and upset to others.
