Eind 2023 heerste er volop consternatie in Hutchings-land: de Londense saxofonist Shabaka Hutchings (VK) hing namelijk zijn geliefkoosde sax aan de wilgen. Dat deed hij in stijl in de Londense Hackney Church door een integrale uitvoering van A Love Supreme (uit 1965), John Coltrane’s iconische meesterwerk. Opvallend: hij keerde de Belgische uitvinding van Adolph Sax de rug toe op het hoogtepunt van zijn populariteit. Lees: in 2022 verkocht hij zowel met zijn band Sons of Kemet als met diens vlaggenschip The Comet Is Coming (in 2024) twee maal AB uit en bracht zo in het totaal 4000 (!) jonge muziekliefhebbers in extase.
Wat volgde waren de zalvende (saxloze) albums Afrikan Culture (2022) en Perceive Its Beauty, Acknowledge Its Grace (2024), niet toevallig uitgebracht op het iconische jazzlabel Impulse! Records dat terecht de bijnaam The House That Trane Built kreeg. Het label was dan ook de thuishaven van John Coltrane’s baanbrekende albums als A Love Supreme, Ascension, Crescent, Live at the Village Vanguard, …
Enter 2026: Shabaka is terug aan de sax op zijn jongste album Of The Earth dat verschijnt in eigen beheer via zijn kersverse label Shabaka Records. Shabaka: “This record is my celebration of freedom in creative self expression. Before the pandemic I could only play the clarinet and saxophone and knew nothing about music production (or how to play the flute), so this has been a journey of learning and a reflection on the music that’s been created as a result.”
The Wire over Of The Earth: “The result is a genuinely experimental record, with more than a dash of cheerful craziness. … A burst onto fresh terrain.” Loud and Quiet: “It’s Shabaka’s most punk record yet.” Stereogum over de vooruitgeschoven track Marwa The Mountain: “It reminds me of a more stripped-down Los Thuthanaka.”
Net zoals zijn grootste inspiratiebron John Coltrane kijkt Shabaka nooit achteruit: “You’ve gotta keep it moving with music, and that’s what typifies all the heroes of the music that I really respect.” zoals hij ooit aan Jazzwise toevertrouwde.
Tot slot nog een mooi citaat uit De Standaard (over Sons Of Kemet op Pukkelpop in 2018) dat Shabaka mooi typeert: “Loof de Heer voor Shabaka Hutchings. Dit gutste van het leven, dit stampte tegen de schenen, dit was evenveel punk als dance als jazz. John Coltrane keek vast glimmend toe van daarboven.”
