About this Event
Gaelic verse for which there are no known melodies: the bards’ stories brought back to life. Compositions by Màiri Callan (voice and clàrsach) with accordion & piano.
Inspired by the premise that Gaelic poetry was composed to be sung, these songs explore the political history of Gaelic Scotland. Having researched the many published collections of Gaelic poetry, Màiri found an extensive body of Gaelic verse for which there are no known melodies: the bards’ stories untold. She therefore set out to give the bards a new voice and to share their stories by composing melodies for ten texts from seven published collections of Gaelic poetry from the 17th and 19th century. Màiri’s work celebrates the poetry of Sìleas na Ceapach, An Clàrsair Dall, Màiri Nighean Alasdair Ruaidh, Iain Lom, Donnchadh Bàn, Iain MacFhearchair and Maighread Nighean Lachlainn.
