About this Event
The sea has long inspired stories, imagination, and creativity within coastal communities. In this interactive programme, storyteller Hafiz Rashid brings the ocean to life through engaging tales of marine creatures found in Singapore’s waters — from reef fish and crustaceans to other sea dwellers that have shaped local folklore and everyday encounters with the sea.
Following the storytelling session, participants will learn to craft their own marine creatures using daun mengkuang (pandanus leaves) in a hands-on workshop led by Wan from Ambin Ubin Using simple weaving techniques traditionally used in Southeast Asian craft traditions, participants will transform natural leaves into fish and sea-inspired forms.
The activity highlights the versatility of pandanus weaving as well as the creativity of kampung communities in working with natural materials. By combining storytelling and craft, the programme invites participants to appreciate the cultural knowledge, imagination, and environmental awareness embedded in traditional coastal life.
