About this Event
This 4-hour refresher course is designed to enhance the skills required to detect, apprehend and prosecute persons operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. The course includes classroom instruction and controlled exercises structured to give the officer practical experience in the evaluation of the adverse effects of alcohol/impairment on driving ability. The classroom refresher consists of the three Phases of Detection, with a strong focus on Pre-Arrest Screening (Standardized Field Sobriety Testing). Students receive a refresher on Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test, Walk-and-Turn test, and One-Leg-Stand test, as developed and recommended by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). This course has been approved for four (4) hours of general Continued Professional Training (24CPT1038). Therefore, officers must attend all four (4) hours and complete the practical exercises to receive credit.
Requirements: Be a certified Ohio law enforcement officer and have completed a certified SFST course. Students are encouraged to bring note taking supplies and to download and review the training material in advance. Printed manuals will not be provided. The NHTSA SFST manual may be downloaded at https://www.nhtsa.gov/sites/nhtsa.gov/files/2023-03/15911-SFST_Participant_Manual_2023-tag.pdf.
Class sizes are limited to 20 students. There is no cost to attend. This program is funded by the Cuyahoga County OVI Task Force and Ohio Traffic Safety Office.
