About this Event
Class meets Tuesdays, 3/18-4/15, 2:00-4:00pm. Eventbrite isn't awesome at delineating class sequencing, so please check days carefully.
In this class, we will talk about entering the sewing world. I spend a fair amount of time in the first two lessons discussing
- what fabric is, how it's made, and how we buy it
- which tools are necessary, vs what retailers want you to buy
- how to set up your space at home for sewing success
- understanding how to work your machine: filling bobbins, threading correctly, avoiding common pitfalls
Lesson three begins our journey into making! We'll talk about how to read patterns, cut our projects, plan for support structures. Weeks four and five get us into the real sewing practice, and by the end of lesson 5 most participants have finished (or nearly finished) their bag.
Teaching machines are available in the studio, but I encourage you to bring your own if you have one. Every sewing machine is a little different, and learning exactly how your machine behaves is a big part of sewing success.
Bring to the first class:
- Notebook and pencil
- Sewing machine and pedal, if you have your own
For the third class, you will need
- 1 yard of quilting cotton for bag outside
- 0.5 yard of coordinating quilting cotton, for inside
- Thread to match the outside fabric
- (Estimated cost: $15-25+ depending on how much you want to spend)
Optional: We use a fusible interfacing for this project. It's sometimes difficult for new stitchers to find the right one, so I offer it for purchase for a whopping $6. (I do not make money on this.) You can buy your own fusible, medium-weight interfacing if you like - you'll need 1.5 to 2 yards depending on it's width. Or you can buy it from me.
