Sewing for Beginners - Retford Library - Adult Learning

The intent of this course is for you to learn basic sewing skills including hand and machine techniques. For some, finding a starting point when sewing and using the sewing machine can be the greatest barrier, but this course will remove all trepidation by breaking the skills down into manageable steps. Before starting a project, it is important to understand the equipment, patterns, and fabrics. This course will take you from start to finish, so that you can create wonderful pieces and express your creativity.  

During the course, we will cover: 

• Hand sewing  
• The sewing machine- set up and health and safety 
• The basics of the sewing machines  
• Creating a simple seam 
• Precise measuring  
• Types of fabrics including woven, knitted, natural and manmade 

Learners may wish to being their hand sewing equipment including needles, threads and scissors.  

Sewing machines are provided.

To book and enrol on one of our courses, you must have been living in England and have been resident in the UK for the past 3 years.

Some exceptions may apply if you are living in England with evidence of the right to remain and are from an EEU/EEAU country (completion of a questionnaire will be required).
