Sewing 101 - Best for Beginner to Moderate Sewers - 4 Classes - 4 Weeks - Complete a custom tote bag - Bring your own machine or borrow one of ours!
Who you are: Someone who wants to learn how to sew on a machine! You have no previous sewing skills or basic sewing skills and are looking for directions on where to start, how to use a sewing machine, choose fabrics, cut patterns, and complete a project!
Class Structure: Hands-on machine sewing class lead by Sewist, Louise Sutton. During this intimate course you will meet with them and 4 other learners for four, 2.5 hour classes.
Course Dates: Tuesday Feb 4, 11,18, 25
Class Curriculum: Sewing machine set-up and operation, basic sewing principals, fundamentals of fabric selection and preparation, essential tools, using interfacing, creating a basic patch pocket, creating box corners, working with lining, considering design decisions, and other best practices for a professional finish.
Outcomes: Participants will create a customized lined tote bag and gain the foundational sewing skills needed to explore new projects with confidence.
What you need: Bring yourself! If you have a sewing machine please bring it along with its pedal attachment and needle. If you do not have a sewing machine, no worries we have machines available. Participants are encouraged to bring their own machine to class to learn its settings and functionality, but if you don't have a machine and aren't ready to invest in one, we'd be happy to make one available to you during class.
You will be responsible for sourcing fabric and matching thread BUT DO NOT buy anything yet - Our course teacher will cover how to select fabric in the first class. Ticket price includes access to all other necessary tools to complete the project.
Beginners Sewing Kit is included in the ticket price: Our in house sewists have put together the best beginners sewing kits in all of New England. You will receive the following, which is the highest quality tools to support you on your sewing journey: Pincushion, Hand Sewing Needles, Size Inclusive 120" Tape Measure, Seam Gauge, Seam Ripper, Pins, Fabric Scissors ,Thread Snips, Needle Threader, White Tailor's Chalk, Black Tailor's Chalk , Sewing needles
* No refund is given for any missed classes in the course. It is your responsibility to come to each class. If a class needs to be missed you can communicate with your teacher to help catch you up on the project from home before our next class.
Week 1 - Get Grounded
Learn how to operate your machine, what tools are key to sewing success, and how to choose fabric.
Week 2 - Get Started
Learn how to translate your 3-D vision into 2-D pattern pieces and master best practices for measuring and cutting.
Week 3 - Get it Together
Learn how to make and attach finished-edge patch pockets and raw-edge straps.
Week 4 - Get it Done
Learn how to securely assemble your bag and add finishing touches.

Louise is a seasoned tailor at The Nest and a versatile stitcher with a background that spans diverse sewing projects, from crafting leather bags to creating couture garments for New York Fashion Week, and even contributing to costumes at Florida's theme parks. With over 15 years of extensive experience in factory settings, Louise is well-versed in industrial sewing and manufacturing, consistently delivering professional and enduring results.
