About this Event
Put your best foot forward and step into 2026 with the intention and inspiration to MEND MORE & BIN LESS! (as our good friend Bridget Harvey stitched into a jumper)
We are delighted to welcome Kare Sekules from NY (New York!) to our NY (New Year!) mending party during her London visit. Join new & seasoned menders , all are welcome for a mendspirational evening together! We will focus on hand sewing repairs on fabric or woollen items.
If you are new to hand sewing, you might like to attend our "Grandma's Hands" Introduction to hand sewing repairs (fabric items) first on Saturday 3rd January, 11am - 1:30pm (this is a monthly class)

The evening is hosted by:
Kate Sekules is the author of "MEND! A Refashioning Manual and Manifesto." She teaches fashion history at Pratt Institute Brooklyn, a new course, "Mending Fashion" at Parsons School of Design NYC, while completing her doctorate at the Bard Graduate Center with a dissertation titled "A History and Theory of Mending." She is the founder of the crowd sourced world mending map visiblemending.org and MAWG, the Mending Archives Working Group, to make mends legible and searchable in museum contexts. She hosts regular surgeries as Dr Mend, as well as workshops and #mendmarch on instagram.
Barley Massey is the creator, crafter and care-taker behind Fabrications. Barley started sewing at a young age, thanks to both her grandmothers and just hasn't stopped! A textile graduate of Goldsmith's University, Barley went on to work in costume for Film & TV before establishing her own textile studio and shop (Fabrications) where she has been championing upcycling, mending and "Cradle to Cradle" principles for over 25 years. Alongside producing one off upcycled pieces, offering her "Remember Me" service, Barley hosts regular classes and events at Fabrications and also free-range!
E mma Mathews is the founder of sustainable, unisex sock brand Socko. Socko's socks (on sale at Fabrications) are made from 'waste' and manufactured by a 4th generation family run factory in Leicestershire. Each pair of socks is accompanied with a mending kit. Socko is also on a mission to extend the active life of clothing by re-teaching the lost art of darning. Emma has taught over 200 people to mend, both in person and via Socko's online workshops. Emma's first book "How to Quit Fast Fashion" was published in October 2020, giving practical tips on things we can all do to have more sustainable wardrobes.
