About this Event
The Institute of Greece, Rome and the Classical Tradition (IGRCT) warmly invites you to the annual Sir Jeremy Morse Lecture. This year, the lecture will be given by Prof. Katherine Harloe, Director of the Institute of Classical Studies and Visiting Professor at the University of Reading, who will speak about ‘Winckelmann’s epistolary art’.
In her lecture, Prof. Harloe will examine the role played by the correspondence of Johann Joachim Winckelmann, the traditional ‘founder’ of classical archaeology, in his canonisation as a figure of emulation for students of classics in Germany, and in the quest for ‘Uranian’ ancestors among activists in the burgeoning European homosexual emancipation movement of the 1890s. In her talk, Prof. Harloe will interrogate the perceived division between ‘private’ and ‘public’ categories of Winckelmann’s literary production, and explore how the educational contexts of his childhood and youth influenced his epistolary art. She argues ultimately that Winckelmann’s letters construct a set of queerly desiring personae more varied and interesting than traditional readings have revealed.
This free lecture, which is open to the general public, will take place in hybrid format: both in-person in the Peel Lecture Theatre at the University of Bristol, and streamed online via Zoom. To attend in person, please book via this Eventbrite page. However, if you intend to join the online webinar instead, please register here: https://bristol-ac-uk.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_VMYLNa2pR6ybkfXRzV4O1Q
After the talk and Q&A, which will last around an hour, those attending in person are welcome to join us for a short drinks reception.
