The exodus of the Hebrew people from Egypt is a basic paradigm of western political thought and culture. Within our country’s history I think particularly of our Pilgrim forebears who established their own New Israel on this continent and the movement leading to the abolition of slavery. Much of our history is a record of the growth of freedom but the quest for greater freedom continues.
