Ireland's national chamber choir returns to Cork International Choral Festival with Palestrina's greatest mass alongside contemporary gems by Gavin Bryars and Ayanna Woods.
In his first season as artistic director, Gabriel Crouch conducts Chamber Choir Ireland in Servant of Servants, Patron of the Arts.
The concert combines Palestrina’s greatest mass with contemporary gems by Gavin Bryars and Ayanna Woods.
Named after Pope Marcellus and sung at Papal Coronations until the mid-20th Century, Palestrina's Missa Papae Marcelli is an epoch-defining masterpiece, said to have saved polyphonic music in the Catholic liturgy.
One of Gavin Bryars' major choral works, On Photography uses texts by Pope Leo XIII combining a modern subject matter (photography) and archaic language (Latin) with music of timeless beauty.
Ayanna Woods' The Golden Hour, conjures the perfect light for the photographer's art. The piece celebrates human connection and our connection to the natural world, evoking images of sunbeams.
This performance will also feature the world premiere of Points and Lines by Timothy Doyle, the winning entry in this year's Seán Ó Riada Composition Competition.
