About this Event
Most people love to hate Arnold Schoenberg’s music. But do they know what they are rejecting? This series will show how to find and love its great hidden beauty, through detailed listening, plain talk with careful live illustration, and repeated hearing. Each of the five events, one per September weekend, will focus on a different genre and artistic moment, featuring the best of the Bay Area’s zealous new music performers. The lecturers are enthusiastic teachers dedicated to all classical music.
Sunday, Sept. 22nd at 7pm - - Recital/Lecture 4: Choral Works
This performance highlights two highly contrasting a cappella choral pieces. One is the early, very richly romantic Peace on Earth from 1907, and the other is Three Thousand Years from 1950, shortly before the composer’s death. They share an optimism about human quest for religious peace after millennia of deadly strife. The vocal and musical means, however, are in great contrast. These two works, dating well before and after the Holocaust, illustrate how long the path of this lonely searching genius wound. Performers will be the Voices of Silicon Valley, directed and conducted by Cyril Deaconoff. The talk will be presented jointly by Deaconoff and Khuner.
