Program: "Macro Magnification" by Keith Kotay
Photographic magnification is the ratio of a subject's size on the camera sensor compared to its actual real-world size. For example, a 10mm size subject which projects as 5mm on the sensor is 0.5x optical magnification (1:2), which is sometimes called 'macro', but true macro is considered to be at least 1.0x magnification (1:1). 1.0x magnification means a 10mm subject projects as 10mm on the sensor, and 2.0x magnification (2:1) is a 20mm projection. However, another consideration is the number of sensor pixels which determines the ultimate resolution of the subject. This presentation will provide an overview of macro magnification and describe various methods of achieving it, including traditional macro lenses as well as extension tubes, close up lenses, teleconverters, and reversed lenses. Also, the complications of high magnification will be discussed such as shallow depth of field and camera shake, and ways to overcome them.
