IMPORTANT: To protect the confidentiality of yourself and others in the online class, we must ask that you adhere to the following requirements. Please understand that failure to adhere to these requirements puts the program participants’ confidentiality at risk and will result in your being excluded from attending the session:
1. You must log in and attend the group alone from a quiet, private, confidential room with no background noise and a strong internet connection. Please do not log in to the meeting from outside or in a public place where others may be able to see or hear anything taking place in the group session. Minimize all other distractions. Other people should not be in the room with you, including children.
2. You must enable your video so the therapist and other participants can see you. Your camera must always remain on and be pointed at you. It cannot be pointed at the wall/floor/blacked out. If you are not visible, the facilitator will assume you are no longer there and will log you out.
3. You may not talk on the phone during class. The facilitator will log you out if you are talking to other people in the room or on your phone.
4. No sleeping or lying down. You need to be sitting upright during the entire class. If we were in a classroom, we would not be able to lie on the floor. Likewise, if you fall asleep, you will be logged out of the class and unable to complete it.
5. You must be on time. The class starts at 5:00 pm on Friday and at 9:00 am on Saturday and Sunday. If you are more than 15 minutes late, you will not be let into the class and will not receive credit. If you are having technical difficulties, you must contact the facilitator via email or phone to inform them immediately (the phone number will be given out in class on Friday at the beginning and end).
6. Please always mute your microphone unless it is your turn to share, and please use the raise hand feature on Zoom. (We will review how to use this feature on the first day.)
7. It is best to participate in class on a computer, not a phone. Your phone may prevent you from seeing/participating in certain aspects of the class. Phones tend to log out frequently on Zoom and lose service. If this happens, you won't be able to complete the course. If you use a phone, you do so at your own risk.
8. You cannot attend this class while driving or riding in a vehicle. You will be logged out if you are in a vehicle and will not be allowed back in the class.
9. You must be on time for all segments of your module. Being late will deem you ineligible for participation.
ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Prime For Life® provides a judgment-free way of understanding how alcohol and drug-related problems develop, what we can do to prevent them, and why sometimes we need help.
Who Is It For? It’s for the curious, the concerned, and those making high-risk choices. Approximately three out of every ten people in the United States make alcohol and/or drug choices that research shows are high risk. They experience the most problems, and this experience is tailored for them. This group includes, but is not limited to, people with a legal or policy violation on the road (impaired driving offenders), on the job, or at school. PRI partners with many state and local systems to provide court-required courses. Shorter variations of this evidence-based, motivational, risk-reduction program make Prime For Life an experience that virtually anyone can benefit from, even those who swear they’d “never touch the stuff!”
HOW DOES IT WORK?
What We Teach
Three learning units:
- Exploring Unit: Examines the perception of personal risk
- Reflecting Unit: Illustrates the progression toward addiction and allows participants to assess where they might be on that path
- Protecting Unit: Guides preparation for personal change
Research and insights based on more than 1,800 studies conducted over the last 75 years around the globe
Specific guidance regarding personal choices, the management of resistance, support for change, and a plan for success
Activities that are to be completed during sessions, utilizing workbooks required for all participants
How We Teach It
Utilizing an easily accessible, media-rich presentation that guides instruction and engages audiences using:
- Images
- Animations
- Videos
With persuasion and motivational protocol, utilizing principles and processes consistent with Motivational Interviewing and the Transtheoretical Model
Emphasizing the role of empathy and the importance of collaboration
Presenting carefully selected information in a non-judgmental way which provokes new thinking and provides individuals with a solid basis for making decisions about their own alcohol and drug use.
