What is Contra Dancing?
Contra dancing is an easy to learn style of community dancing with a high level of interaction and fun. There's no fancy footwork, and the caller tells you what to do. You will join hands with many other smiling people as you travel in circles, zig-zags, and figure 8's - the movement never stops and the live music carries you along.
You can find more information at https://www.halifaxcontra.ca/details-about-our-dances/ *
*Our dances usually take place indoors, so bear in mind that some of the information on our website will not be relevant to this special outdoor event!
Is this event appropriate for children?
In general, kids who are 8 and older can follow the directions and successfully participate. Younger kids are still welcome - they can shadow along with their parents, or just dance freely to the music.
What should I bring?
- It's often breezy down on the waterfront- bring an extra layer.
- The dancing makes you thirsty and there is no potable water on site -- please bring a water bottle!
- If you can, we'd appreciate a modest cash donation ($2-$20) for our wonderful live musicians <3
- If you want to come watch the dancers and enjoy the live music, bring a portable chair- the seating on site is limited.
