Learn about native Irises growing in Washington State: how to identify our regional species, like western blue-flag, Oregon flag, grass-widows, and blue-eyed grasses. What are their ideal habitats, where do they grow, why are blue-eyed grasses even in the Iris family? Learn hands-on tips to distinguish each species and let’s find out if any can thrive in home gardens or managed landscapes. We’ll also look the invasive yellow-flag Iris and its persistence in Washington, highlighting the latest research and efforts to eradicate it. Sarah Verlinde-Azofeifa is a native plant botanist and educator, affiliated with the Washington Native Plant Society (WNPS) and University of Washington. She is currently the Program Coordinator leading the WNPS Northeast Stewards program, a group of dedicated volunteers helping to restore three parks within the City of Spokane.
