A culminating exhibition of work by MFA candidates in the X-Lab program at Seoul Institute of the Arts who have spent the past 4 weeks in NYC participating in workshops, cultural excursions, and mentorship sessions. We are excited to the three independent works that explore the intersection of light, sound, and dreams in a single environment.

Light of Manhattan

While looking at the moment of light, remember that this moment is entirely yours. Sunlight is an energy and a substance equally bestowed upon all of humanity. Light is universal, but the experience of it is uniquely personal. By discovering light, we encounter ever-changing scenes shaped by nature, life, temperature, and perception. 75 envelopes representing the avenues and streets of Manhattan feature a drawing of light on the outer surface, while inside, it contains the original photograph of the depicted scene. Projections overlaid map the artist’s light exploration route. After the exhibition, Light of Manhattan will be mailed to Korea, where it will be exhibited again.
Chilling · Healing · Feeling: An Orphic Journey in New York
Boomi Choi
An immersive audiovisual installation that traces a journey of rest, restoration, and revitalization through the lens of Orphism. The work begins with 'Chilling,' a meditative state of intentional pause and relaxation, which flows into 'Healing,' where restoration naturally occurs, and culminates in 'Feeling,' the emergence of renewed energy. Responding to real-time weather data from New York City, the installation creates dynamic visual compositions synchronized with a musical progression from ambient soundscapes to lo-fi grooves. Inspired by the chromatic harmonies of Orphism encountered at the Guggenheim Museum, the work creates a contemporary interpretation of color-music relationships through these three interconnected phases of restoration.
Night Score #3 — Sound Recordings for a Closed Gallery, Two People, and Deep Night

The Night Score series reimagines the act of listening by focusing on real spaces, dreamers' bodies, and the rhythms of a deep night. Sound functions as a crucial medium for reconstructing memory and sensation, engaging the audience in a listening experience that blurs the boundaries between fiction and reality. Audiences will reserve a 30 minute individual time slot where they will record, listen to, and immerse themselves in the soundscapes imagined by the artist. Audiences are asked to record an audio file of a dream and upload it to the google form while making their reservation here.
