I’m excited to share the next step in my ongoing sensory research project, *Sensing the JQ* - a new participatory *Sensory Sound Walk* exploring Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter through listening, attention, memory and embodied experience.This walk continues my wider investigation into how we perceive place through the senses — not just visually, but through sound, scent, texture, atmosphere and emotional resonance. Following recent workshops focused on smell and materiality, this event shifts attention toward the sonic character of the JQ: hidden acoustics and everyday soundscapes that shape our relationship with the area.
Together we’ll walk slowly, listen deeply, record observations and discuss how sound influences perception, memory and connection to place.
We’ll be joined by Paul Liam Walker, creator of ambient sounds and music inspired by noise and nature. Paul will bring a recording device to capture sounds during the walk, and participants are welcome to bring their own recorder or phone if they’d like to record something they hear along the way.
After the walk, we’ll gather at GULP for refreshments and an informal sharing session, where we can listen back to recordings, reflect on the experience and discuss our findings together.
The project forms part of my continuing research into sensory design, expanded dining and multisensory experience-making through GULP.
I’m particularly interested in how collectively we can reveal overlooked aspects of a city, and how creative, sensory-led methods can help us better understand environments undergoing change.
