Why Attend?

This event provides a unique opportunity for education professionals to dive deep into the legal landscape of SEND. You’ll receive expert guidance from Thomas Emmett, a seasoned legal expert in the field of education law, alongside practical talks with Abigail Hawkins, an experienced SENCO and founder of SENsible SENCO CiC. Together, they will deliver insights to help you:

  • Understand SEND law and the legal obligations of local authorities, educational settings, and SENCOs.
  • Confidently navigate the EHCP process, including effective drafting of EHCPs, reviews, and re-assessments.
  • Explore the legal framework for school funding, address common misconceptions, and learn actionable strategies for challenging local authority decisions.

What to Expect:

The SENsible25 Legal Conference is divided into three main sessions, each focusing on one of the key aspects of SEND legalities:

  1. SEND Law – Explore the foundations of SEND law, key legal definitions, and the responsibilities of local authorities and educational settings. Learn how the law can support you in securing provisions for your students.
  2. EHCPs (Education, Health, and Care Plans) – From requesting an EHC needs assessment to building legally compliant and effective EHCPs, this session will offer practical advice and legal perspectives on ensuring every aspect of the EHCP process is up to standard. Special focus will be placed on critical sections such as Section B, Section F, and Section I of an EHCP.
  3. Funding for SEND – Gain a thorough understanding of the legal framework governing school funding, common challenges education settings face, and strategic ways to advocate for proper funding and provisions for your students. Learn to dispel common funding myths and overcome barriers in the system.

Interactive Elements:

Alongside the core legal sessions, participants will have the chance to network with other professionals from across the UK, fostering connections and sharing practical experiences in dealing with SEND legalities. The conference will also include a live demonstration of Samsung’s interactive display technology, showcasing how cutting-edge tools can enhance SEN learning environments.

Session Highlights:

  • Legal Insights on EHCPs: Learn what makes a strong, compliant EHCP and how to challenge incomplete or inadequate plans.
  • Update on the SEN Legal system
  • Practical Funding Strategies: Understand how to secure appropriate funding for your school and overcome common challenges.
  • Live Q&A: Ask your burning legal questions directly to Thomas and Abigail in a dedicated, open-floor session.
  • Networking Opportunities: Connect with SENCOs, Head Teachers, and Governors, exchanging ideas and solutions in a relaxed environment.

Who Should Attend?

The conference is specifically tailored for SENCOs, Head Teachers, Governors, and other educational professionals who work with or manage special educational needs and disabilities. If you’re involved in SEND provision, EHCP development, or funding decisions, this event will provide you with the knowledge and tools to stay legally compliant while maximising the support you offer to students.
