The medical school will welcome John F. Kearney, PhD, in June as the featured speaker for Seminars in Investigative Medicine.
Dr. Kearney’s presentation, "Development and Maintenance of a Mouse and Human Anti-Glycan Antibody Repertoire," is scheduled for noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, June 14, 2023, at the W.E. Upjohn M.D. Campus, 300 Portage Street, in downtown Kalamazoo.
The event is free and CE and MEDU credit is available. For more information about CE credit, please go to https://bit.ly/42PTpwd.
Dr. Kearney is a distinguished professor in Microbiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
For more than 40 years, Dr. Kearney has investigated the basic aspects of B cell immunobiology and provided insight into the interactions of adaptive immunity with the innate immune system in response to highly conserved antigens expressed by commensal and pathogenic organisms important in human disease. With a tool chest of antigen-specific hybridomas, anti-clonotype markers, transgenic and knockout mice with B cells specific for epitopes targeted by the antibody response to Streptococcus pneumoniae, Enterobacter cloacae, Groups A and B streptococci he initiated renewed interest in the development and function of innate-like Marginal Zone, B1a and B1b B cells and their secreted antibody products. As part of his onging research, Dr. Kearney’s long-range goal is to study the ontogenetic development of human B cell repertoires to organisms of clear relevance to human health.
Seminars in Investigative Medicine is a research seminar series at WMed aimed at bringing together the community of investigators both within – and outside — the medical school.
