Sheila M. Wilkinson, attorney, social worker, educator and empowerment coach, will discuss “Five Legal Documents Every Parent Needs for Their Graduating Senior (before they go off to college)” on Monday, June 15, 7 pm, at the East Bank Regional Library (4747 W. Napoleon Avenue in Metairie). This event is free of charge and open to the public.
The purpose of this seminar is to provide parents with an overview of the ins-and-outs of the five most important legal documents that they should know, understand, and have before their graduate heads off to college:
• Powers of attorney (and their several combinations)
• Advance directives vs. living Wwlls (their importance and why/when each matter)
• Releases (FERPA, HIPAA, etc.)
• Provisional mandates (for the in-between ... graduation to 18)
• Brief discussion about wills (and why they may or may not be necessary)
After completing this seminar, participants should have a solid starting point so they can make informed decisions — and be able to assist their graduating seniors with decisions.
