PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Connections – a story about continuity, compatibility, + what architects should know
A building is like a stuffed animal; if the seams are not tight and complete, the stuffing will come out, even a small hole or an incorrectly attached eye will deflate the animal in time. We want to keep the stuffing in our buildings, and the only way we do that is to pay attention to the little details, joints, and penetrations. Understanding the connections that need to happen based on materials, building or room uses, and compatibility of materials will make the quest to create the best possible stuffed animal/building a reality. The presentation is about building environments, air, vapor, and water continuity.
New Tall Wood Code Provisions: Understanding Advanced Design Topics
In January 2019, the International Code Council (ICC) approved a set of proposals to allow tall wood buildings as part of the 2021 International Building Code (IBC). Based on these proposals, the 2021 IBC will include three new construction types—Type IV-A, IV-B and IV-C—allowing the use of mass timber or non-combustible materials. These new types are based on the previous Heavy Timber construction type (renamed Type IV-HT) but with additional fire-resistance ratings and levels of required non-combustible protection.

This presentation will take a detailed look at the new code provisions and methods of addressing the new requirements. Topics will include tall-wood specific high rise and sprinkler requirements, methods of demonstrating fire-resistance ratings, fire design for penetrations, connections and abutting panels, allowances for exposed timber, exterior walls, concealed spaces and more.
