Award-winning Florida artist Selwyn Birchwood blends deep blues, psychedelic rock, funk, and Southern soul into his signature style: Electric Swamp Funkin’ Blues. Birchwood’s sound is fiery, soulful, and entirely his own. His latest album Exorcist (Alligator Records) is his boldest yet—13 original tracks produced by Grammy-winner Tom Hambridge, ranging from heartbreak to headlines to autobiography. Songs like “Florida Man,” “Exorcist,” and “Underdog” showcase Birchwood’s lyrical flair and rhythmic inventiveness.
Live, Birchwood is a barefoot powerhouse—commanding the stage with grit, charisma, and vocals that channel both gravel and gospel. A dynamic lap steel player and riveting frontman, he turns every performance into a full-body experience.
Born in Orlando in 1985 to parents from Tobago and the UK, Birchwood fell under the spell of Jimi Hendrix and Buddy Guy, igniting his lifelong journey into the blues. Mentored by blues legend Sonny Rhodes, he learned guitar, lap steel, band leadership, and heart-first playing—all while earning an MBA from the University of Tampa.
He formed The Selwyn Birchwood Band in 2010, won the 2013 International Blues Challenge, and exploded onto the scene with Don’t Call No Ambulance, followed by fan-favorites Pick Your Poison and Living in a Burning House, earning Blues Music and Living Blues awards. His music has landed on major blues charts, SiriusXM’s Bluesville, AAA radio, and NPR stations.
Touring nonstop, Birchwood’s band has lit up festivals across North America and Europe. With Exorcist, they’re poised to keep spirits lifted and demons banished. As Birchwood says, “You cannot listen passively. We’ll make you dance, and we’ll make you think.”
