Self-Defense for Organizers, Educators, Artists & Liberators

Join us for a community self-defense class facilitated by Kirby Spivey IV of Marital World. You spend your time protecting, organizing, teaching, creating, and showing up for others. This class is about learning how to protect yourself, too.

Designed for organizers, organizational leaders, educators, artists, and liberators, this session offers an introduction to situational awareness, body confidence, conditioning, and practical self-defense, rooted in the realities of where and how violence most often happens.

We’ll begin by tuning into the space around us—who’s in the room, where the exits are, what feels different, and how you would move if something unexpected happened. From there, we’ll explore situational awareness in public spaces, environments that feel safe, and settings where violence against marginalized communities can occur. Then we’ll get physical through conditioning, technique, and partner drills, giving you an opportunity to move what you’ve learned from your mind into your body.

The goal isn’t to live in fear. It’s to build awareness, confidence, readiness, and trust in your own body.

You’ll leave with practical tools and embodied skills that can help you stay grounded and respond when your mind is overwhelmed or scattered.

About the Facilitator:

Kirby Spivey IV has trained across seven martial arts disciplines over fifteen years, holding a Shidokan black belt. Discovering his Portuguese, Native, and African ancestry as a teen led him to Capoeira, and reclaiming that heritage through martial arts is part of why he's stayed in the practice ever since. He teaches through a lens of community, empowerment, and holistic wellness, drawing on six years as an educator in the Noble network and volunteer work in underfunded communities. Kirby is the founder of Martial World, connecting people to free events, workshops, and a gym network pass to help them find where they belong.
