Self- & Co-regulation through BMC and CI - Workshop in Helsinki

In this workshop, we will begin the day with Body-Mind Centering, using movement and awareness practices to tune into our inner, oceanic environments. We will then explore Contact Improvisation, focusing on relational movement and co-regulating with others.
This workshop is open to everyone and we will facilitate the space for each person to be able to listen to their own bodies and comfort levels. Workshop will be held in English, partly with translation to Finnish.
Work with consent and boundaries are implemented in all the exercises and in the way we facilitate the space. The importance is in checking-in with yourself and your partner and keeping the dance and contact open for changes. For us it’s important that the participants find ways to know what works best for them, with joy and pleasure, and they can stay response-able.

Background of Body-Mind Centering®:
Body-Mind Centering® (BMC) is a somatic movement approach that explores the relationship between the mind and the body through experiential anatomy, developmental movement patterns, and hands-on techniques. It was developed by Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen in the 1970s. BMC emphasizes embodiment, self-awareness, and the integration of movement, touch, and consciousness to support holistic well-being.
Background of Contact Improvisation:
Contact Improvisation (CI) is a postmodern dance practice that explores movement through shared weight, touch, and physical awareness. CI is a duet movement form originated by Steve Paxton, Nancy Start-Smith and others in 1970's. The art form combines physical touch and expressive movement as primary tools to integrate the whole body-mind in an internal focus on the moment to create an authentic dancing dialogue between two people (Koteen and Smith, 2008).
BMC and CI have been intertwining since the beginning of those forms.

ABOUT KAISA:
Kaisa Kukkonen is a dancer and an interdisciplinary artist-researcher from Finland, working with movement, language, and somatic practices. Her work explores the poetry of movement, the politics of touch, and the dynamics of consent, and pleasure activism.
With a background in dance, performance, and writing, Kaisa has been practicing Contact Improvisation (CI) since 2005 and teaching since 2010 across Finland, Sweden, Germany, Austria, Iceland, and the Netherlands. Her CI journey has been shaped by influential teachers and colleagues such as Joerg Hassmann, Christine Mauch, Gesine Daniels, Katja Mustonen, Anya Cloud, Iiris Raipala, Terhi Rasilo, Lisa Nelson and Nita Little.

ABOUT LINDON:
Lindon Shimizu is a dance artist, somatic movement educator by Body-Mind Centering® (BMC) and therapist in the field of bodywork. With extensive studies in BMC® and other somatic approaches, Lindon has dedicated to supporting individuals and groups deepen their connection to their bodies and explore movement as a pathway to self-awareness and well-being. He has proposed workshops, classes, and individual sessions in Europe, Brazil and Japan for the past twenty years. Through somatic practices, anatomy, physiology, and movement therapy, now in Kindly studio, Lindon offers a space for being and moving, self learning, creating wellness in between fluids and membranes.
