Help us restore at-risk stands in Eaton Canyon by collecting the seeds that will be grown for restoration!
About this Event

This event is the first in a three-part series focused on seed propagation of native plants.

Volunteers will learn respectful seed collection practices, how to identify mature and viable seeds of key species, and various methods for collection. This is the first step in our restoration plan, which follows the CNPS Native Seed Strategy.

Last month’s Vegetation Mapping exercise (led by Max Yasuda of the Eaton Canyon Conservation Volunteer Group) revealed emergent restoration needs; areas of Eaton Canyon are at risk of (or already experiencing) vegetative habitat loss due to climate change and competition from invasive species. To counter this, a team of dedicated volunteers will be following a restoration plan (led and developed by Nina Raj), to strategically reintroduce hyperlocal native plants.

Location: Eaton Canyon Nature Center. The first 45 minutes of this event will take place in the classroom of the Nature Center, after which point we will split into breakout groups and move outside to begin seed collection.

Prerequisites: No experience needed.

Trail Difficulty: easy to moderate; a short (<1 mile) walk from the parking area will take us to the seedlot. We may hike up to 2 miles depending on time.

Attire: layered clothing including long pants and hiking shoes, sun protection

Bring: Water bottle, sun protection

Questions: For questions about the event and venue, email workshop leader Nina Raj ([email protected]). For questions about your Eventbrite tickets, email [email protected]
