About this Event

This expert panel presentation will introduce and detail best practices in security programs for small business districts and how small businesses can utilize Technology, such as Security cameras and other hardware. In addition, the panel will discuss other security strategy options including Community-Safety Ambassadors along with benefiting from collective action among business owners in their commercial districts.

At this workshop, attendees will learn about:

  • Approaches small business districts have taken to address security needs across the district and in supporting individual businesses
  • Community safety ambassadors - engaging and organizing community (small businesses and surrounding neighborhoods)
  • Technology applications and target hardening - From cameras to hardware

Most recently Nate was the primary contractor for the Laurel District holiday safety ambassador program the comprehensive seven day, 22 hour a day, safety, and security program from December 1, 2023 – January 15, 2024. Needs firm has a number of small business accounts. Nate has conducted de-escalation trainings and site assessments for both neighborhoods and individual clients.

Executive Director

Trybe trains and manages community ambassadors in and around the greater San Antonio area of Oakland. Trybe ambassadors are trained violence interrupters and work daily to address concerns including individuals who may be violent, hazardous waste, and broken facilities. Tyibe ambassadors also assist in the development of micro/social enterprises in the community.

The Laurel District and the Montclair District are two of Oakland‘s Business Improvement Districts (BID). These districts serve the local small business communities assisting with district safety, beautification, and economic development. Daniel will share how the districts have organized small businesses for best practices in target hardening their individual locations, working collaboratively for safer streets in the commercial district, and partnering with community organizations like neighborhood councils to address safety concerns, and grow resources.
