Brighton LGBTAIQ+ History Club is excited to present this one off special edition, a unique show weaving personal material and community interviews, by theatre maker Tom Marshman.
SECTION 28 AND ME
Part autobiographical, part community archive, this show attempts to explore the impact of Section 28.
During the making of this show Tom has connected with LGBTQ+ communities across the country, leading tea parties with over 200 LGBTQ+ people.
The show brings this collected archive of information together and weaves it into a new performance which considers moments from Toms past body of performance work in an attempt to see his own life through the prism of Section 28.
Section 28 and Me is a playful, honest and heartfelt portrait, exploring queer stories on past invisibility and shame.
In this new show theatre maker Tom Marshman asks: has the impact of growing up within Section 28 legislation made him both a show off and an oversharer? Digging deep into his psyche, drawing on personal reflections, past performances, and his Dads unique perspective, he considers this period of forced silence.
Tom asked many queer communities: what is your Section 28 story? Gathering inter-generational voices, connecting history and politics with the deeply personal, to celebrate the resilient and unique LGBTQIA+ community.
Section 28 was in place during 1988 - 2003, it was the legislation that stopped schools mentioning queer life.
