"Secrets of the Giant Squid" presented by Sam Clough
The giant squid (𝘈𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘶𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘥𝘶𝘹) is often regarded as a terrifying monstrosity of the deep that we can only see the faintest glimmers of if we’re unlucky enough to encounter the ravenous creature. The inaccessibility of the deep-sea and the arcane, jargonistic way that biologists speak about the giant squid only increases its mystery to most people. Here, Samuel Clough hopes to shed some light on this occult subject for you by giving an accessible overview on the biology of this charismatic animal.
Sam is a PhD candidate at the Auckland University of Technology. Originally from the University of Glasgow, the United Kingdom, where he did an undergraduate dissertation on giant squid and a field project using environmental DNA to detect cryptic species residing within Arran's marine protected zone. Now he is carrying out research on NZ Flying Squid at the AUT Lab for Cephalopod Ecology and Systematics (ALCES) and sifting through the stomachs of deep sea squid for potential treasure troves of dietary information. We are looking forward to hearing Sam tell us about this research in the future when the data is in!
Following Sam's presentation, we invite you to connect and network with fellow attendees.
