What started in Wisconsin as an effort to promote winter cycling became known as Santa Cycle Rampage. As participation, festivities, and excitement grew, other cities began adopting their own versions as a way to spread good cheer, and now we’re on our second year here in Dallas.
Santa Cycle Rampage is all about positive vibes, high-spirited smiles, and blitzing the town with merriment, and the jolliest of times will be had by those who fully embrace the event. So save your ugly sweaters for something else. All varieties of Santas (feel free to get creative – Cowboy Santa, Elvis Santa, Tour de France Santa, etc.) and all related characters (elf, reindeer, Mrs. Claus, Grinch, Jesus, Christmas tree, menorah, snowman, gingerbread man. toy soldier, penguin, etc.) are welcome to join.
Your ticket gets you a merry, social-pace group ride through picturesque downtown Dallas, followed by an epic after-party with FREE street tacos and elotes while they last! There will be two meat choices as well as a vegetarian option; other food items will be available for purchase. Did I mention beer and cocktail specials? DJ Tofu Sniper? Santa Cross? If you joined me for Spooktacular Critical Mass in October, you already know that I know how to throw a party!
Proceeds from the event will go to a beloved local cyclist, Sara (DeShong-Baker) Withrow. You may know her from her days working as a mechanic and wheel builder at Transit Bikes or doing cycling advocacy work in Austin. On September 15th, as Sara was riding on White Rock Creek Trail, she was struck by another cyclist as they rounded a corner. The speed and impact of the crash caused her to be knocked out of her shoes and thrown a significant distance. That collision, in addition to her impact on the pavement, caused a fractured skull, brain bleeds and contusions, a lacerated mouth, as well as a badly broken collar bone. Due to the bleeding in her brain and the shearing force of the impact, she also suffered a couple of seizures while the trauma team at Texas Health Presbyterian stabilized her and subsequently placed her on a ventilator. She was taken off of the ventilator the next day, but it was a week before her short term memory started to return, and she had to relearn how to do everyday things like walking and brushing her teeth. She is incredibly grateful to still be alive for her two-year-old daughter but is on a long road to full recovery. While her recovery has been going well, Sara has been unable to return to work, and her collarbone still requires surgery, as it never healed. Proceeds from this event will go a long way in helping Sara continue her rehabilitation and take care of her family.
Details: Arrive at Kanpai Coffee + Beer Garden at 215 Henry Street no later than 12:30 PM. There is some free street parking nearby, as well as metered spots. A city-operated lot is located catercorner to Kanpai and costs only $5 for the day. If you'd prefer to park at Dallas Farmers Market, Kanpai is located less than a mile away The gate to its spacious patio will be open, so roll your bike in, check in, and grab a beverage. We will ride about 10-12 miles before returning to Kanpai around 2:30 PM for the after-party.
One last thing, this year’s ticket includes an optional bonus! If you'd like to start the festivities earlier, meet at Trinity Cider (located a couple of minutes away, also in Deep Ellum) at 10 AM. We will ride over to DORBA Creekside MTB Park for a little off-road rampaging. Don't have a gravel or mountain bike? No problem! Join us as we ride on paved roads to the park and watch assorted holiday characters jump around, maybe cruise over some easy rollers too. Either way, you'll get double the miles and pack even more fun into the day!
