The Seattle Chamber Orchestra opens their 5th season with a concert built around a remarkable coincidence: two of the 20th century’s most singular composers, Hungarian miniaturist György Kurtág and American sound-sculptor Morton Feldman, were both born in 1926. That makes 2026 their shared 100th birthday, and SCO marks the occasion by putting their music side by side for an audience that may know neither name yet. Don’t let the unfamiliarity scare you off — Kurtág and Feldman didn’t write music to intimidate. Kurtág packed entire emotional worlds into pieces that can last under a minute, like tiny, glowing embers of feeling, while Feldman stretched sound out into long, hushed spans where a single chord can feel like it’s suspended in mid-air. Hearing them together is less a history lesson than an invitation to slow down and really listen — this is music about noticing small things, which makes it some of the most quietly moving repertoire you can encounter live. Feldman's music in particular rewards total surrender, so audience members are welcome to bring a pillow, blanket, or yoga mat and settle in on the floor to experience the piece in full relaxation. A pre-concert talk at 7:15 PM (concert at 8 PM) will help set the stage before the music starts.
Protagonists of the evening are Lorenzo Marasso, pianist, conductor, and SCO's founder and Music Director, along with members of the Seattle Chamber Orchestra – violinists Adrianna Hulscher and Yi-Ting Kuo, violist Jordan Voelker, and cellist Matt Rehfeldt.
