The public is invited to join our artsy and intellectual casual Salon del RGV conversations on the 2nd Thursday of each month from 7 to 9 p.m. at CommonSpace coffee shop in McAllen.
Our June 11th Featured Speaker is Karina E. Chapa, M.Ed., who will present on “The Power of Bilingualism."
Karina, originally from Monterrey, Mexico, holds a Bachelor’s degree in International Relations from Tecnológico de Monterrey and a Master’s in Bilingual Education and School Principalship from the University of Texas–Pan American. After becoming an elementary bilingual teacher, she went on to serve in key school, district, and regional educational leadership roles.
She received the Public Education Honoree Award from TABE in 2016 and RGV Outstanding Child Advocate award from Children At Risk in 2024. From 2016–2023, she was Director of Language Proficiency, Biliteracy, and Cultural Diversity at Region One ESC, supporting over 160,000 emergent bilingual students, their families, and educators in our border region.
She now serves as Executive Director of the Texas Association for Bilingual Education (TABE), advocating statewide for more than 1.3 million bilingual students, while also teaching as an adjunct at Texas A&M University–Kingsville and speaking nationally on the power of bilingualism. “Salon” sa•lon noun 1. an artful conversation held monthly where artists, writers, and arts professionals, and arts and philosophy-minded individuals come together to bond, network and get out of their heads for a little while. It is a conversation; a support group; sometimes a counseling session; always a networking extravaganza; an experimental lab for new ideas; a place to learn and grow by leaps and bounds as an artist and a professional.
