Auditions for Season 13
A NOTE ON THE LAB'S STANCE ON COLOR-CONSCIOUS CASTING
What is color-conscious casting, and why is it important? Color-conscious casting intentionally chooses an ethnically diverse cast for shows originally written without diversity in mind. It's important because representation matters. Theatre is better when all stories are told, not just those of a single segment of society. Intentional color-conscious casting goes hand-in-hand with seeking shows that have a universal appeal to audiences of all ethnicities, genders, and sexual orientations.
While some playwrights dictate specific ethnicities in their work, The Laboratory Theater of Florida is committed to offering opportunities on our stage for ethnically diverse actors. We encourage everyone to audition for our straight plays on either June 13th or June 16th from 6 pm - 9 pm each night. Registration is encouraged, walk-ins will be handled in the order they arrive, as time allows. If you don't have a monologue, the theater will provide one. If you cannot attend in person but wish to audition, please send us a message so we can set up a video audition.
Come play with us!

CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS:
Non-Traditional, Multiethnic Casting is Sought. All ethnicities are encouraged to audition.
Le Vicomte de Valmont (Male, 30s – 40s): The playboy of France; former lover of the Marquise de Merteuil; a distinguished, wealthy, effortlessly charming and feared lothario/rogue; enormously self-confident and charismatic; stealthy, manipulative, and determined in the extreme; a proud man used to getting his way; ultimately becomes enlightened by falling in genuine love with his latest conquest, Madame de Tourvel. Stage combat experience a plus but not required. NUDITY REQUIRED.
La Marquise de Merteuil (Female, 30s – 40s): A rich widow; ex-lover and now co-conspirator of le Vicomte de Valmont; an extremely shrewd and formidable woman with deep reservoirs of intellect, emotion, and passion, though she guards the latter two characteristics fiercely; a supremely cool and cunning manipulator; impenetrable and unapologetically deceptive; she plays the game better than anyone.
Mme. de Tourvel (Female, 20s – early 30s): A beautiful, virtuous, and deeply religious married woman of notoriously unassailable moral character; Valmont sets out to corrupt her for sport; passionate in her faith and loyal to a fault, Tourvel is relentlessly pursued and seduced by Valmont and, after giving over, is overwhelmed by deep feeling, passion, and ultimately grief.
Mme. de Volanges (Female, 30s – 40s): A wealthy widow: cousin and friend of the Marquise; mother of the teenaged Cécile; respectable and spirited but quirky and parochial; very aware of her daughter’s budding sexuality and mindful of making a beneficial match for her; deeply distrustful and disdainful of Valmont.
Cécile Volanges (Female, 18 – early 20s to play 15): Madame de Volanges’ pretty and virginal young daughter, recently released from a convent to enter into a marriage her mother arranged; girlishly exuberant yet tentative, increasingly curious about the ways of the adult world the more she is exposed to it; devoted to her music teacher, le Chevalier Danceny. NUDITY REQUIRED.
Le Chevalier Danceny (Male, 20s – 30s): Cécile’s music teacher and pet of the Marquise; a charming, eager and naive young man, caught between boyhood and manhood; devoted to Cécile, though not necessarily the suavest or confident suitor; ultimately maturing into a man of honor. Stage combat experience a plus but not required. NUDITY REQUIRED.
Mme de Rosemonde (Female, 60s+ to play early 80s): Valmont’s elderly arthritic aunt; wise, witty, and sympathetic; devoted to her nephew, but not blind to his ways; has removed herself from the intrigues of the aristocracy; comforting and level-headed; the moral center of the play.
Azolan (Male, 20s – 40s): Valmont’s valet and also his spy, dapper and droll; does most of Valmont’s dirty work and reaps the rewards – both in his pocket and in his bed.
Émilie (Female, 20s – 40s): An attractive courtesan favored by Valmont. Charming, common, savvy; holds high society in contempt for its hypocrisy—a willing pawn in bigger games than she can understand, though never unrewarded. NUDITY REQUIRED.
Audition Requirements:
Please prepare a 1-2 minute dramatic monologue.
