About this Event

Every year hundreds of kittiwakes make the long journey to the British Isles from the world’s second largest ocean: the Atlantic. Many birds are lost during the winter months from predators, storms and starvation.

Kittiwakes, usually breed on coastal cliffs and islands, some have even chosen to nest inland, like the ones on the Tyne.

At Seaham they have chosen to nest on the old industrial workings and cliff walls by the Marina and working harbour.

Join us at Seaham Harbour Marina as we collect as much information as we can about the colony: Number of breeding birds, the number of apparently occupied nests and the breeding stage the different nests are.

Find out why monitoring the colony regularly is so important and how you can help to make a difference.

If you have binoculars please bring them, we will have some available to borrow too.

This is an outdoor event, so please wear warm and weather appropriate clothing and outdoor suitable footwear.

Booking is essential.

This event is being delivered in partnership with Durham Bird Club and Durham County Council, and is a SeaScapes Coastal Wildlife Group event, funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. For more information about the SeaScapes project please visit https://exploreseascapes.co.uk/
