Paul Krueger is a trumpeter, composer, arranger, and educator, and the Director of Jazz Studies at the University of Oregon School of Music and Dance. He is the director of the Oregon Jazz Ensemble and teaches courses in jazz pedagogy and jazz arranging, as well as lessons in jazz trumpet, improvisation, and composition/arranging.
A versatile trumpeter and improviser, Krueger has also published numerous works for large jazz ensemble. A three-time winner of a Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composer Award, his music for large jazz ensemble has been performed internationally by artists such as Steve Wilson, Kendrick Scott, and Eric Alexander. He performs frequently in the Pacific Northwest with artists such as Joe Manis, Roger Woods, Keith Brown, and more.
Inspired to pursue a career in music education by his parents–both music teachers–Krueger brings a wealth of expertise and a dynamic approach to his teaching. Outside of his academic commitments, he is dedicated to engaging with students in the community and fostering a love for jazz and improvisation among youth. He is highly sought-after as a clinician and holds key roles such as the director of the UO Summer Jazz Improvisation Camp, co-director of the Oregon Jazz Festival, and director of the UO Day of Improvisation, an annual, free one-day workshop tailored for high school students.
Before his appointment at the University of Oregon, Krueger served as trumpet instructor at Willamette University and music instructor at Lane Community College. Under his direction, the Lane Jazz Ensemble was recognized as the community college winner in the large jazz ensemble category of the Downbeat Student Music Awards. Krueger holds a Bachelor of Music Education degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (2009), and a Master of Music degree in Jazz Studies from the University of Oregon (2011).

Newhart performs well over a hundred shows, annually, with regional musicians in many configurations. He has recorded and/or released music with Mhondoro, Inner Limits, Jim Olsen, Idit Shner, Jack Radsliff, Brian McWhorter, Steve Vacchi, Tony Glausi’s Funk Nonet, Joshua Hettwer, Mastrogiovanni Ska Project, Tony Glausi, Jessika Smith, Michael Radliff, Paul Krueger, The Long Shots and Kevin McDonald in addition to his own albums Marmara and Sound In-Sight, a double-LP vinyl released in 2016 under the band name Obsidian Animals.
In addition to a performing career, Newhart is an adjunct instructor of jazz piano at the University of Oregon and Lane Community College. From 2013-2023 Newhart was the choral director at the Academy of Arts & Acadmics, a local high school in Springfield, OR.
Over the past decade, Newhart has supported the vibrant local jazz scene in Eugene by volunteering his time at the Willamette Jazz Society which operates The Jazz Station in Eugene, Oregon. From 2019-2022 he was the president of the board of directors and saw The Jazz Station through the forced closure of the pandemic, coming out on the other side with a remodeled venue and internal operational structure.
Torrey’s most recent musical projects include a collaboration with Idit Shner, John Mambira, Garrett Baxter, and Ken Mastrogiovanni entitled Mhondoro and a rock/blues band with Olem Alves called Inner Limits. Mhondoro’s recent album Ngatibatanei was released earlier in 2024 following their debut album Heat Wave in 2022. Inner Limits’ debut blues album Hit the Highway was released in January, 2019 along with an album of cover tunes called Rewrites Vol. 1. Inner Limits is releasing an album of original music this summer 2024.
Oregon-based drummer, Ken Mastrogiovanni, brings a unique sensibility and modern voice to the drums and music, making him a rising musician of his generation in his scene. The very early years of his music environment was shaped by his older brother’s j-pop, ska, and electronic bands, as well as listening to the latest jazz and avant-garde music his father played at home. This would subconsciously influence his musical interests and vocabulary going forward. Starting drum set at the age of eleven, his musical adventure was fueled by many important mentors, eventually leading him to recent performance opportunities as a sideman with such artists as Jaleel Shaw, George Colligan, Dick Oatts, Jim Rotondi, Roxy Coss, Clay Jenkins, Bruce Williams, Geoffrey Keezer, John Raymond, Remy Le Boeuf and the Redshift Trio.
