SD SOAP July - John St. Claire from the Neural Science Institute
About this Event
We network and socialize shortly before and after the formal presentation, which begins at 10:30. The meeting is FREE but please RSVP.
The location is:
La Jolla Village Square Community Room (downstairs next to AMC theater)
On Thursday, July 30th we have an esteemed guest visiting us from The Neural Science Institute.
John St. Claire, the Director of Research and Development, will discuss neuroplasticity and answer the question, "What has to change in the brain for recovery to stick?"
He will start by unpacking neuroplasticity in plain language, explaining how the brain’s wiring adapts to repeated substance use, stress, and environment, and why those changes can make old patterns feel so automatic and hard to escape.
John will walk through real world examples of how clinicians and staff can use this science to help residents notice their own thought behavior loops, interrupt craving driven routines, and rehearse healthier responses in the moments that matter.
He will close by sharing candid lessons learned, including what has surprised the team, what has not worked as expected, and where this brain based perspective has genuinely shifted outcomes or conversations in the recovery setting.
Attendees will leave with a more grounded understanding of neuroplasticity, a few practical ways to talk about neuroplasticity with clients, and a clearer sense of how neuroscience can quietly strengthen, rather than replace, the relational and peer support work they are already doing.
John is an accomplished scientist with a track record of developing non-invasive technologies to help people feel better through innovative experiences. He is constantly improving our proprietary protocols to create better outcomes for patients. Prior to the Neural Science Institute, John was in private practice for over 15 years. He is a U.S. Navy Veteran and a member of the International Society for Neuroregulation & Research (ISNR).
