This single-cell RNA-seq workshop is a four-hour, hands-on session designed to introduce participants to scRNA-seq analysis.
About this Event

scRNA-seq Integration and Differential Expression

Lead trainer:

Susan Si and Raymond Zhao (The University of Melbourne)

Workshop Description:

This workshop introduces participants to single-cell RNA-seq analysis using R and Seurat. The session will cover pre-processing steps, including data import, quality control, and sample integration. Participants will explore approaches for clustering and identifying differentially expressed genes between experimental conditions. The workshop will also introduce pseudobulk analysis for comparing expression patterns across cell types and experimental groups. By the end, participants will understand the core workflow for analysing and interpreting single-cell transcriptomic data.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Import single-cell RNA-seq data for analysis in R using Seurat.
  • Perform quality control and filtering to remove low-quality cells.
  • Integrate multiple samples or conditions
  • Identify and interpret differentially expressed genes between cell populations or experimental conditions.
  • Apply a pseudobulk approach for differential expression analysis using DESeq2.
  • Generate clear visualisations to communicate results.

Target Audience:

Researchers and students in biology, genetics, bioinformatics, and related disciplines interested in or working with scRNA-seq data.

Eligibility:

This free workshop is available to staff and students at The University of Melbourne and its affiliated institutes.

You must register for this event using an affiliated institutional email address or your registration may be cancelled.

Prerequisites and Requirements:
  • Basic familiarity with R and scRNA-seq.
  • Participants must bring their own computers with access to the Uniwireless or Eduroam internet/wifi.
  • Web browser (Firefox or Chrome recommended).

Access:

If you require any further information, or have any access requirements in order to participate in this workshop, please contact us as soon as possible to discuss your requirements: [email protected]

We recommend following our Eventbrite page if you wish to be alerted when we release new workshops for registrations.

Important Policy Update:

Starting 1 August 2025, participants who miss two or more workshops without proper notice will be placed on a 6-month waitlist for full workshops. Cancellations must be made at least 24 hours in advance. Please read the full policy here: https://mbite.org/guides/policy/
