Scripting Life: Shaping Our Stories for the Screen

This workshop treats screenwriting as a spatial practice and provides creative exercises, craft strategies, and working tools to make that shape visible. With an emphasis on memoir and biopic, we will work through how lived material becomes cinema without losing either truth or form. Participants will develop their own projects while exploring the foundations of structure, character, visual storytelling, genre and dialogue in film. Whether you're drafting or revising a script-in-progress, you'll leave with diagrams, language, and a clearer sense of what your story wants to be.
Open to writers of all levels, regardless of past screenwriting experience. This is a 3-week workshop, with a 2-hour session each week. Please prepare for approximately 2-5 hours of work between sessions.

About Your Teaching Artist

Sylke Rene Meyer (she/they) is an artist, director, author and Professor of Creative Practice Research at Northeastern University Boston. She previously held professorships in Cologne (ifs) and at California State University Los Angeles (Creative Writing and Critical Making). Her work spans cinema, theater, performance, media art, and public art. Her latest book, Soviet Narratology and Spatial Story Design: The Unintentional Storyteller (Routledge, 2026), reconstructs the genealogy of interactive narrative forms through Soviet narratology and cybernetics.

Community Access Lottery

Health Safety Guidelines

If you have tested positive for Covid-19 within a few days of attending an event at LitArts RI, please contact Staff so we can let others know of possible exposure. We ask that you wait 14 days or until testing negative to return to the Center.

LitArts RI Refund Policy
All ticket sales are final except in the case of illness or emergency. If you are unable to make an event due to illness or other circumstances outside of your control, LitArts RI will issue a refund for the amount of the ticket (not including Eventbrite fees) as soon as we are notified.
If an event is cancelled at the discretion of the organization, we will issue refunds in the full amount (including Eventbrite fees) to all registrants.
