THE FILMS
THE ADDAMS FAMILY (1991) begins as our delightfully morbid clan gathers on their rooftop to pour a cauldron of boiling oil onto Christmas carolers below, and the anti-festivities don’t end there! Wednesday and Pugsley create their own Grand Guignol spin on Shakespeare for their school’s winter pageant and traumatize the unsuspecting normies in the audience, and the Addamses host not one but TWO family get-togethers, one involving a performance of the Mamushka, a spirited song and dance (with knife throwing!), and the other a costume party that wanders out to the family cemetery for a game of Wake the Dead!
In ADDAMS FAMILY VALUES (1993), the ever-gloomy Addamses welcome a newborn (who looks just like Gomez!) and hire a nanny—bubbly serial killer Debbie Jellinsky (Joan Cusack)—who seduces Uncle Fester and schemes to murder him for his money. Debbie sends Wednesday and Pugsley to a sleepaway camp where toxic positivity reigns. The counselors and their most privileged campers (guided by a major superiority complex) try to assimilate the misfits and put on a play about the first Thanksgiving. Wednesday embraces the role of Pocahontas, torches revisionist history, and leads a righteous revolt against the ruling class!
