Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso (1887–1918) was a groundbreaking Portuguese modernist artist whose innovative and highly individual style drew on Futurism, Cubism, Abstractionism, and other avant-garde movements while remaining independent of any single artistic school. A key figure in the development of modern art in Portugal, he organized two landmark exhibitions in 1916 that helped establish the country's Futurist movement. Despite his close connections with leading Parisian artists such as Picasso, Modigliani, and the Delaunays, his career was cut short by the Spanish flu at the age of 30. Largely overlooked during his lifetime, his work has since gained international recognition, and today he is celebrated as one of the most original and influential figures of early twentieth-century modern art.
